Prior Reunions

2025 Reunion - Johnson City, Tennessee

October 03-04 at the Holiday Inn Convention Center. Our hosts were Harold and Anna Reno. Seventy eight (78) family members were in attendance.

Why Carter County Tennessee?

A substantial portion our family members descend from John Reno and Susannah Thorn.  John Reno, born 13 April 1715 in Stafford County, Virginia and died 1808 in Elizabethton, Carter County, Tennessee, along with nine of his children migrated to Elizabethton, Washington County, North Carolina from Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and Virginia sometime between 1784 and 1787 after his wife, Susannah nee Thorn died.

Washington County, North Carolina later became Carter County, Tennessee when Tennessee became a state June 1, 1796. John and his family were one of the first settlers in the Sinking Creek area. Family tradition has it that John was 6 feet 3 inches tall, well built and weighted about 180 pounds. He was dark complexioon and was shy and quiet. His wife Susannah was tall and thin.

We know that John was somewhat involved in the State of Franklin controversy as evidenced by a public advertisement dated July 19, 1786, “I hereby give Publick Notice, that there will be an election held the third Friday in August next, at John Rennoe’s, near the Sickamore Sholes where Charles Robertson formerly lived, to choose members to represent Washington Co in the General Assembly of North Carolina, agreeable to an Act of Assembly, in that case made and provided, where due attendance will given per me” It is believed that John did not support the State of Franklin and sided with Colonel John Tipton. We also know that John and his sons, William Lewis (1738-1798) and Charles (1754-1828) were members of the Sinking Creek Baptist Church, the oldest church in Tennessee.

The sons and daughters of John and Susannah migrated to other parts of eastern Tennessee, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois.

Sinking Creek Baptist Church

Our forefathers attended the Sinking Creek Baptist Church Baptist Church.  The church is the oldest church in Tennessee and John Reno along with other members of his family, William Reno, Chares Reno and others were members and attended.

It is very inspirational being in the church knowing that our distant relatives spent many hours there worshiping.  What a way to conclude the reunion.

Sycamore Shoals

Sycamore Shoals is not only significant to the Reno Reneau family because John Reno home purchased from Charles Robertson was nears Sycamore Shoals.  It is also site of many events that helped shape our country.  In  1775, the Transylvania Purchase was signed, where settlers acquired land from Native Americans.

It is also the location of the Overmountain Men’s gathering before the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780, a turning point during the American Revolutionary War.

Sycamore Shoals served as a key supply and recruitment center during the American Revolutionary War.

Sycamore Shoals hosted the signing of the Watauga Association, an early form of self-governance.
